1. What Is a Wheelchair and What Is It Used For?

A wheelchair is a seated mobility aid designed for supported movement. Depending on the model, wheelchairs can be self-propelled, attendant-propelled or battery-powered and are available in different configurations for indoor, outdoor, transport and everyday use.

2. What Are the Different Types of Wheelchairs Available?

There are several wheelchair designs available:

• Manual Wheelchairs: Self-propelled or attendant-propelled models available in standard, lightweight and foldable configurations.
• Electric or Power Wheelchairs: Battery-powered models operated through a joystick or controller.
• Transport Wheelchairs: Lightweight models designed primarily for attendant-assisted movement and convenient transportation.
• Reclining Wheelchairs: Wheelchairs with adjustable backrests that allow different seating positions.
• Commode Wheelchairs: Multi-purpose designs that combine wheelchair seating with toileting functionality.
• Bariatric Wheelchairs: Heavy-duty models with wider seating and higher weight capacities.

Features and specifications vary by model.

3. How Do I Choose the Right Wheelchair?

Consider the wheelchair type, seat width and depth, weight capacity, chair weight, propulsion method, portability, environment and required features. Depending on the model, you may also consider armrests, footrests, brakes, reclining mechanisms, seating configuration and folding dimensions.

4. What Is the Difference Between Manual and Electric Wheelchairs?

A manual wheelchair is moved using hand rims or by an attendant, while an electric wheelchair uses a battery-powered motor and controller or joystick. Manual models can be convenient for transport and storage, while electric models provide powered movement without manually propelling the wheels.

5. What Are Transport Wheelchairs Used For?

Transport wheelchairs are designed for attendant-assisted mobility and convenient transportation. They are generally lightweight and compact, and many models can be folded for storage or vehicle transport.

6. What Makes Bariatric Wheelchairs Different?

Bariatric wheelchairs are designed with higher weight capacities and reinforced construction. They may feature wider seats, stronger frames and other components designed for higher-load applications. Always check the maximum user weight and seat dimensions of the individual model.

7. Are Reclining Wheelchairs Useful for Extended Sitting?

Reclining wheelchairs feature an adjustable backrest that allows the seating angle to be changed. This provides additional positioning flexibility during extended periods of seated use. Check the individual product's reclining range and operating instructions.

8. What Are Commode Wheelchairs Used For?

Commode wheelchairs combine seated mobility with toileting functionality. Depending on the model, they may include a removable commode container, open seating configuration, armrests, footrests and locking wheels for convenient use in suitable bathroom or indoor environments.

9. Are Wheelchairs Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor Use?

Suitability depends on the wheelchair's design and specifications. Many models can be used indoors, while selected manual and electric wheelchairs are designed for suitable outdoor surfaces. Consider wheel size, ground clearance, frame dimensions, tyre type and turning radius when selecting a model.

10. Are Wheelchairs Foldable and Easy to Transport?

Many manual and transport wheelchairs feature foldable frames for convenient storage and transportation. Some electric wheelchairs also have compact or folding configurations. Check the folded dimensions and wheelchair weight before selecting a model for vehicle transport.

11. What Weight Capacity Do Wheelchairs Support?

Weight capacity varies by wheelchair type and model. Always check the individual product specifications for the maximum user weight and ensure that it is not exceeded.

12. How Comfortable Are Wheelchairs for Extended Use?

Wheelchair comfort depends on seat dimensions, cushioning, backrest design, armrests, footrests and seating configuration. Some models offer padded seating, high backs, reclining backrests or adjustable components for additional positioning options.

13. How Do I Maintain a Wheelchair?

Regularly inspect brakes, wheels, tyres, footrests, armrests, folding mechanisms and other moving components. Check that fasteners are secure and that adjustable components operate correctly. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule where provided.

14. How Do I Clean a Wheelchair?

Clean the frame using a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution, following the manufacturer's care instructions. Wipe the seat, backrest, armrests, handles and other surfaces regularly. Allow the wheelchair to dry completely before storage or use.

15. Can Wheelchairs Be Used for Different Types of Everyday Mobility?

Yes. Different wheelchair designs are intended for different mobility and transport applications. Manual, electric, transport, reclining, commode and bariatric models each have different configurations and features. Select according to the product specifications and intended use.

16. How Do I Choose Between Different Wheelchair Types?

Consider the method of movement, portability, seating configuration, environment, weight capacity and required features:

• Manual wheelchairs use hand rims or attendant propulsion.
• Electric wheelchairs provide battery-powered movement.
• Transport wheelchairs are designed for attendant-assisted transport.
• Reclining wheelchairs provide adjustable backrest positioning.
• Commode wheelchairs combine mobility and toileting functionality.
• Bariatric wheelchairs provide higher weight capacities and wider seating.

Review the individual product specifications before purchasing.
